I like to have a good mix of classic and trendy pieces in my home, and I’m willing to spend on them accordingly ($ for trendy, $$$ for classic; in yelp terms.) I try to choose classic “staple” items (think things you only want to replace every 5-10 years, like bedroom furniture, kitchen tables, bookshelves, etc.) and look for more “on-trend” or unique decor to switch out every couple seasons.
I love a good list, so I thought I’d share my favorite nationwide and local home decor/furniture stores as a helpful reference for anyone who’s in the market for a home upgrade (aren’t we all?)
My favorite nationwide home stores:
- Target: ($ ) By far my favorite spot for trendy, inexpensive décor. The majority of my smaller décor items are either collected from travel or Target. I also like Target’s smaller furniture like side tables and floor lamps.
- West Elm & CB2: ($$ – $$$) I love both of these retailers for their mid-mod décor and furniture. They are the younger, hip sister brands of Pottery Barn and Crate and Barrel.
- Crate and Barrel & Pottery Barn: ($$$ – $$$$) Crate and Barrel is my go-to for kitchenware like dishes, glasses and trays. I love Pottery Barn’s mirrors and décor. Both are higher in price but are very good quality.
- Lulu and Georgia: ($$$ – $$$$) My absolute favorite for rugs. It’s also a great place to browse for inspiration.
- Article: ($$) High-quality, mid-mod furniture for reasonable prices.
- Wayfair/Joss & Main/Overstock: ($ – $$$) Each of these websites has a wide range of quality furniture across price ranges. I tend to look here for office furniture, lighting and inexpensive rugs.
- Etsy: ($-$$$) You can get just about anything on Etsy. I especially love finding unique home decor items while supporting small shops.
My favorite local (Des Moines/Iowa) home shops:
- Homemakers: ($$ – $$$$) Most of my “big ticket” furniture items (sofas, bed frames, TV consoles) are from Homemakers. They have a large selection of quality furniture brands for various price ranges. They also carry Magnolia Home pieces!
- Porch Light: ($) This spot in the East Village is my favorite for picture frames. They have a collection of reclaimed barn wood frames that have a beautiful weathered look. They also have cute stationary, posters, rugs and small dishware.
- CKD Vintage: ($ – $$) I used to live in an apartment above CKD Vintage but now I shop their Instagram stories more than anything! They have some great vintage finds – like copperware and pottery, but they go fast so you have to slide right into those DMs if you see something you want.
- Simple Treasures and Blush: ($$) These sister boutiques in Pella have the cutest selection of on-trend and modern farmhouse décor.
- Indie House: ($$$ – $$$$) The inspo from the interior of Indie House’s shop is enough reason to visit but they have some cute smaller décor items, as well as furniture, rugs and custom design services.
- Red Geranium: ($$) This shop is in Clear Lake but I had to give it a shout out because they always have chic seasonal decor. Seasonal decor can be tacky but Red Geranium does it right. They also have beautiful faux and real florals.
- Accents and Interiors: ($ – $$) I recently visited this spot in Urbandale with my mom. They have a wide range of on-trend smaller décor items, wall art and kitchenware.
