Modern Mountain-Inspired Home Decor
Nothing inspires me more than time in the mountains. My adoration for alpine living started when I was young when my parents took us to Colorado every year, both in the winter and summer. My fondness continued into adulthood when my husband and I got engaged on Avalanche Peak in Yellowstone National Park two years ago.
Freshly inspired from our trip to Breckenridge I thought I’d kick off my first “Picks of the Week” post with some modern mountain-inspired home decor.
I admire mountain homes most for their cohabitation with nature. Typically, when a housing development is constructed here in Iowa, the ground is leveled and trees are flattened to make space for the neighborhood. I cringe just writing it. But in the mountains, builders must adapt their design to the landscape, demolishing only the trees at the foundation of the house and working with the slope of the mountain.
Alpine interiors also have a deep connection with nature, manifested in thick wood beams, towering windows and a wide range of textures. My picks below bring cabin warmth to any home.
Shop Mountain-Inspired Picks
When the winter days and summer nights chill the mountains, it’s all about warmth inside. And soft, yellow lighting is my favorite way to achieve it. I like this pick from CB2 because of it’s warm cast and contemporary look.
Like I’ve said before, a rug can really set the stage of a room. This neutral, textured rug provides a cooler hue with lots of texture.
This warm, geometric-patterned rug provides a cozy setting for furniture.
Mountain terrain is all about texture. Adding textiles to the wall creates interest and warmth in among contemporary accents.
I’m one of the rare few who has mixed feelings on sectionals. I definitely think it requires a certain space to successfully accommodate the largeness of a sectional. Lodge-like rooms with ultra-high ceilings are perfectly fit to balance the weight of a sectional. I still prefer a light to cream fabric but grays and neutrals can work here too.
06 // Multi-texture Pillows
Add depth to your sectional or sofa with pillows in various textures and colors in a palette.
This is a delightfully transitional piece, while a slouchy butterfly chair usually vibes bohemian, the leather sling and rope wraps on the frame add a western touch.
There’s nothing cozier than putting your feet up on a soft, furry ottoman after a day of hiking.
09 // Glass Vase with Pampas Grass
Pampas grass is having a major moment – and it’s actually native to South America. But these dyed bunches from World Market pair perfectly with large glass vases in any home.
This candle comes in bergamot and jasmine, but what I love about it is its dark color. Black accents here throughout a room can create nice contrast.
I love all of the grain and knots in these alder-looking shelves.
Water hyacinth is usually light in color but this one is stained a nice, deep espresso.
Another perfectly transitional piece. The chunky knotty pine is ubiquitous with traditional log cabins, while the natural finish and modular shape result in a scandanavian/contemporary look.
