I posted on Instagram recently about how I’ve been seeking more inspiration and boldness in my environment since the function of our home has changed significantly over the past year. Spaces that were previously dedicated for winding down in the evening are now also an office, gym, restaurant, etc., demanding a more energizing, creative atmosphere.
A simple way to energize a room is by adding color – whether in the form of paint, wall art, furniture or decor. But it’s important to be strategic about where and how you add color so you don’t overwhelm a space or tire of it quickly. Below I rounded up five creative ways to incorporate color into your home.
1. Rugs
Adding a colorful rug is my go-to for otherwise neutral spaces. Not only does a rug anchor the room and add interest, but it’s a piece you’ll actually want to replace in five or so years, so it’s easier to take a “risk” or incorporate color in a less permanent manner.
2. Unexpected Accents
Colorful wall art is predictable, but colorful bench cushions are unique and functional. You don’t have to choose something as wild as these bright round ones. Even a long, flat bench cushion in can add a pop of color. A blanket, throw pillows and poufs can have the same effect.
3. Shower Stalls
Okay, now we’re moving away from the “simple” part, but how pretty are these colorful showers? Something about these muted/pastel colors in the shower still read pretty neutral to me, which is my favorite way to incorporate color. Not all color has to “pop” or be shocking. In fact, I think the most clever use of color is fitting it in seamlessly with neutrals.
4. Inset Walls
I’m over accent walls and into inset walls. You may not have a space like this in your home. (Well, you probably do, but you may not have the extra storage space to remove the doors and store the clothes elsewhere.) But if you do have an inset space like this, painting the interior has such a gorgeous effect. I especially love how this blends with the rest of the room more seamlessly than accent walls, since meeting point of the two paint colors is hidden.
5. Board and Batten
I’m still not over board and batten. Extra wall dimension painted a pretty sage green, mauve or teal can make an otherwise plain space super-unique.
What fun ways have you incorporated color in your home? Let me know in the comments!
